At first I thought the same thing, but I don't have Quicktime on my machine anymore being on the NMCI intranet, they removed it from all of our workstations after Apple ceased supporting it on April 15, For some reason Microsoft Office requires Quicktime to play MP4 files even if Windows Media Player is able to play them and is the default player. We recently had Quicktime removed from our systems here and now any powerpoints with embedded mp4 files will no longer play the video.
For Office I would search your Program Files directory to make sure that Quicktime was indeed removed, I suspect it is still there somewhere. I have searched many websites trying to figure out a workaround for PP needing Quicktime to play mp4 videos even if WMP can play them and have not been able to find a solution.
If you truly don't have Quicktime installed and PP is playing the mp4 videos within PP, I'd sure like to know your setup. I think it would help quite a few people that are in this predicament.
Ok I found this workaround that appears to work on some machines. Unfortunately it doesn't work on the desktop I need it to work on because of the way Office was installed to meet security restrictions here. I tried it on another desktop with Office and it worked.
Drawback is that the file is not embedded into the powerpoint and exists outside of it. Also the URL value must point to the location of the file on the machine you are running powerpoint on.
I tried using environment variables in the file name but this didn't work for me. If you go to the top of the page in the link above there is also a method to insert video as an object which does allow you to insert the movie into powerpoint. You then have to click on the object to get WMP to open it. So there are some workarounds.
Still it would be best if Microsoft would just allow WMP to play mp4 files from directly within PP as it does for other video files. Blows my mind this was set up this way. I have a customer who is trying to insert a video file, MP4 format, into a Powerpoint presentation slide.
Neither of us has Quicktime for Windows installed it was removed by the administrators after Apple discontinued support. His work experience has spanned the computer world, from sales and support to training and repair. He is also an accomplished public speaker and PowerPoint presenter. By James T Wood. Choose "Option. Use the Movie tools on the Insert tab in PowerPoint, if at all possible. You have more control over the way the video plays, including editing and embedding options.
