Xp setup hangs registering components

Covered by US Patent. Come for the solution, stay for everything else. Welcome to our community! The installation works up until it gets to the 'registering components' part and then hangs. It always hangs at the same place 13 minutes remaining.

The PC doesn't completely freeze up - it still cycles through the XP 'advertising' on the right hand side of the screen, but it never gets past 13 minutes remaining. I've tried the 'long' format option, which should check the drive for errors, but it doesn't find anything. I don't think it's an error on the CD, because the machine isn't reading the CD when it crashes, and if I remove the CD it doesn't ask me to put it back in again.

I had this problem a year or 2 ago and i kicked it real hard and it worked fine but i trashed gods name that day so probably got back at me for it.
